A bouquet of flowers, an elaborate, well chose card, an envelope containing a handwritten note expressing our condolences in a very personal way.  These are traditional and customary ways of expressing sympathy and sadness during the loss of a dear friend or love one.  But what about giving a sympathy gift basket or sympathy gift during such occasions?  Have you done so; or even consider it?

Sympathy gifts can range from a basket of fruit and flowers to a bottle of wine; a candle, gourmet cheese, all in an elegant open weave basket with wooden handles.  What could be wrong or out of place with that!  Out of place never!  Expressing a thought or a feeling?  Well many think so.

Nonetheless, be honest with yourself, when you see a sympathy gift during a time of loss, how do you feel?  Do you think – a bottle of wine -- does it fit the occasion?  Or worst yet – whose celebrating now!  Well, all joking aside, what a sympathy gift really says is our thoughts and hearts are with you.  That trendy and modern; yes, but the statement behind the gift should never be missed.

Sure it breaks from the traditional flowers or card but it is gaining great popularity and a large following.  Furthermore, many companies offer sympathy gifts as part of their regular gift inventory.  In fact, there are many specialty companies offering an exclusive line of such gifts.  They also employ consultants and experts skilled in customizing your sympathy gift needs.

Also, wine companies for example, some have an exclusive selection of wines with special packaging as sympathy gifts.  It is the packaging themselves that conveys in a nutshell both the intent and the meaning behind such a gift.  In many cases that's all it takes – a note or straightforward message clarifying the presence of such a gift during the time of loss.

Well, one might say, did I miss the curve; was I sleeping during the change from tradition to trendy as far as sympathy gifts are concerned?  Well the answer is yes you have been!  But that's not unusual.  In fact one could say, is in keeping with tradition and in fact customary.
